Sera Tonin is a DJ, musician and sometime drag queen. Born and raised in the UK, they cut their teeth in the deep house and techno scenes in Birmingham, before moving to Asia almost 10 years ago and never looking back.
Sera Tonin has played variously Basement Club in Hangzhou, the now defunct Mansion club in Shanghai and at DADA in Beijing, for BaiBaiDisco, supporting Steve Bicknell. They now live and work in Hanoi, Vietnam, promoting under the LGBTQ-oriented collective Crystal Queer, which they co-founded, and having been booked to DJ by drag crews like Wet Market, Peach and Genderfunk and promoters such as Sacred Sounds and Defused Mood, seeing them play throughout Vietnam at venues such as Savage, Kali, Birdcage, The Lighthouse, Sala Club and The Warehouse (Hanoi) as well as the Observatory and Broma Bar (Saigon), and sets at festivals such as Treehouse, Bloom and Re(Treat) in Mai Chau. Through Crystal Queer, they also host a monthly radio show on Hanoi Community Radio, the Crystal Queer Power Hour - episodes can be found at https://www.mixcloud.com/CrystalQueerPowerHour/.
Priding themselves on their versatility and eclectic mixing style, Sera Tonin’s first love in electronic music was minimal techno, but influence is drawn liberally from deep and classic house, pop, acid, vogue, electro, nu-disco, UKG, hard trance and ballroom music . As at home spinning tunes at an afternoon drag brunch, an evening drag show, throwing down peak-time weaponry at 3am or with an ambient and esoteric sunrise set, they try always to adapt their sets for the spaces they find themselves in whilst still keeping some essential essence of themselves in everything that they do and bringing queer, positive energy for their audience to connect with and move to.
