Vargas After-Hours
30 September 2023, Saturday
1/F Galleries, UP Vargas Museum
Doors open at 5:00 pm
The UP Vargas Museum presents Vargas After-Hours (Vargas x Kaput x Monochrome), a night of art, music, and performance featuring artists, a post-rock band, and techno DJs, happening this 30 September 2023, Saturday. Vargas After-Hours starts with a conversation at 5 PM with Derek Tumala, Kiko Escora (Manila Animal), Christina Bartges (Badkiss), and Wesley Valenzuela (from Monochrome), about rave culture alongside the alternative music scene in Manila in the 2000s. The conversation will be moderated by Vargas Museum Curator Tessa Maria Guazon.
A performance by the Monochrome band and back-to-back DJ sets with James Clar and Manila Animal, Badkiss and Kevin Shaw, DQMX and Christal will follow. They will enliven the evening with experimental rock and electronic dance. Video works by Mikaela Benedicto, Thirdworldbb, Jellyfish Kisses, and Jao San Pedro will be installed at the 1/F Galleries.
Vargas After-Hours is the museum’s latest public program—it dims its lights and keeps its doors open beyond viewing hours to feature a series of events to be held at the museum at night. This idea of a transformative use of space is amplified by the museum through various events combining music and performance. Vargas After-Hours is a shift in the UP Vargas Museum’s spatial function, parallel to Kawilihan’s history as a social hub, beyond typical viewing times and when the day turns to dusk.
